Online date ends in high-speed chase

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A woman had a dangerous encounter with online dating after her date took her on a high-speed chase with New Mexico State police.

Investigators say the woman met Angel Gutierrez, 18, on a website called Mocospace.

On March 22 nd an officer with NMSP spotted a white car whipping around the corner on Comanche and I-25 headed towards the Big I.

The officer flipped on his lights and Gutierrez allegedly took off driving erratically, passing a car on the shoulder of an overpass at more than 70 miles per hour.

Gutierrez was heading east on I-40, driving sometimes as fast as 107 miles per hour as he sliced through traffic.

Police say the woman dating Gutierrez and her friend were inside the car at the time of the chase.  During the police pursuit, he allegedly told the women that he was wanted for homicide.  Although police say there is no record of that and believe Gutierrez was either trying to scare the women or impress them.

The women begged Gutierrez to stop and pull the car over but say he refused.

Instead he slammed into a freeway wall, careened a curb and then a pole. Gutierrez had his door open and took off before the car even stopped and ran down into a diversion channel.

Officers with APD located Gutierrez the next day at his home where he was arrested.

Chances are he won’t be meeting women online anytime soon, he’s locked up for leading police on that chase and forcing the two women to join him.
