CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) - A former Clovis police officer who killed a woman in a crash has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor traffic violations.
Stephen Gallegos ran a stop sign while on routine patrol in November 2010 and hit a truck carrying Mary Castillo.
Castillo, 56, died, and the driver, Edith Payton, 40, was seriously hurt.
Gallegos was initially charged with vehicular homicide and causing great bodily injury but the judge dropped the charges saying the grand jury wasn't handled properly.
Gallegos has now pleaded guilty to one count of careless driving and failure to control speed.
He's scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 7.
