ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque police officer is in the hospital and the guard dog who took bite out of his leg is dead after being shot during a drug raid Monday.
The dog paid for that mistake with its life.
Around 3 p.m. the Albuquerque Police Department southeast narcotics unit executed a search warrant at an apartment at 4745 Gibson Blvd. SE.
When officers went into the yard one detective was bitten in the leg by a pit bull, police reported.
Officers shot the dog twice killing it. The detective needed about a dozen stitches on his knee.
City animal control officers took away another, smaller pit bull.
Police said little about the man they were after other than he had a pair of outstanding felony warrants and now he also faces charges for dealing drugs.
Officers said they're still investigating this suspected drug ring and expect to make more arrests.
