LAS CRUCES (KRQE) - A star New Mexico State University basketball player is under investigation after witnesses say he violently attacked a fellow student at a party.
The victim was hospitalized, but NMSU's coach says his star player will not miss the upcoming game.
According to witnesses, NMSU forward and senior Tyrone Watson is the man who beat 19-year-old Miguel Rascon for flirting with a girl he was with.
Rascon received facial fractures, a broken nose and received 10 stitches after the incident.
The fight happened Friday night at a house party in Las Cruces.
According to a witness Watson stepped on Rascon's face and stomped on his chest because he was flirting with a girl he likes.
Rascon was taken to the hospital and is where the police report was taken naming Watson the suspect.
NMSU is now looking into the incident.
”We do know there was some kind of incident and we're fact finding at the administration level but as far as we know its a non-issue right now for us,” NMSU head coach, Marvin Menzies, said.
That may soon change.
At the hospital, Rascon said he did not want to press charges.
However his family told KDBC in El Paso he has since changed his mind.
At this time no charges have been filed against Watson.
Despite the recent allegations, Watson will be traveling with the team for an away game Thursday.
