ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police say methamphetamine addicts are stealing registration and insurance cards.

Cars in the Huning Castle neighborhood near Old Town have been hit by thieves about a half dozen times in the past week.

The thieves are not only going after things left out in the open they are going for the glove box.

“They can steal your identity by taking the registration and insurance out of your glove box, two things that are mandatory by state statute that you have to have in your vehicle,” Steven Sink said.

Sink works in crime prevention for Albuquerque police. He says ripping off those two pieces of paper can go a long way when a thief wants to steal your identity.

“If they can steal your identity and use that to supplement their addiction that is going to last them a lot longer than just stealing something and trying to go sell it,” Sink said.

Sink suggests keeping your insurance card in your wallet and always lock your glove box.

Thieves will probably still be able to get into it but it may slow them down enough for someone to see them.
