ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) -The man found dead on a street by a newspaper carrier Wednesday morning appears to have been shot or stabbed, according to Albuquerque police.
The carrier making his morning rounds discovered the body in the 700 block of Georgia Street SE around 5 a.m. The carrier initially reported the man to be down and out, but responding officers noticed obvious trauma to the man's neck.
The officers could not tell if the injuries were from a shooting or stabbing, according to an Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson.
Police canvassed the neighborhood and found residents who said they had heard gunshots during the night. However it is not yet clear whether that is connected to the case.
The state Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the cause of the man's death and confirm his identity.
At midday police were saying they did not know the man's name and could only describe him as a black male. Georgia between Kathryn and Southern avenues remained closed with no immediate indication of when it would reopen.
