Neighbors describe scary SWAT standoff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Albuquerque Police are shedding new light on Tuesday's deadly SWAT standoff in the foothills. At the center of the stand-off are two brothers, at least one suspected in a Sunday night shooting that injured an APD officer.

One of the brothers, Michael Carroll, 20, surrendered to police, but his brother Kendall Carroll, 21, was shot and killed by a State Police sniper.
     
Wednesday, Chief Ray Schultz explained how dangerous the scene was. Police released a 9-11 call from a person living in the apartment complex where the standoff happened .

"He just slid the screen off the window and was about to climb out with the gun in his hand, I'm watching him right now," said the 9-11 caller, who had kids in his apartment with him.

Another neighbor shared a picture with KRQE of the situation developing right outside her front door. The photo taken through a peep-hole shows SWAT team members in front of her door.

Police were after Kendall Carroll, a prime suspect in Sunday's shooting that injured APD officer Ignas Danius.

When officers arrived at the complex, Kendall and his brother Michael refused to come out, and even burrowed their way into a neighboring apartment using a kitchen table leg.

Michael Carroll eventually surrendered, but police said Kendall continued to shoot multiple rounds from inside. Chief Schultz said detectives weren't sure exactly how many rounds were fired.

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said police made it clear it was a dangerous situation.

"About noon, they asked who was in the apartment with me, and I said my two granddaughters and he said well get them, and we got to get you out of here now," she told KRQE News 13.

The woman added, she and her grandkids ran from the scene, and into the officers car as they heard gunshots nearby.

"Its too close, too close to home," she said. The woman said she couldn't get back into her apartment until 1:30 Wednesday morning.

The State Police sniper who killed Kendall Carroll was identified Wednesday as Shane Todd, a six-year veteran with State Police. APD K-9 Michael Hernandez, a seven-year-veteran, also fired his rifle four times at the apartment window so officers could deploy tear gas, but none of those rounds hit Kendall.

Police said they found Kendall Carroll had two guns, a loaded .380 handgun found next to his hand, and a .45 semi-automatic that police said is the same gun used in the Sunday shooting that injured the APD officer.  

Police said Kendall has a rap sheet beginning at age 11 and has had 29 encounters will law enforcement, and several arrests.

Chief Schultz added, investigators believe Kendall was intentionally shooting at police on Sunday. The officer injured Sunday was released from the hospital after surgery and is recovering. He will undergo physical therapy.
