SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) - The landlord Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Investigators believe killed two of his tenants is still on the run.
News 13 spoke with one of the victim’s family members who said after seeing what the suspected killer, Arthur Anaya, 54, is capable of they are afraid he might hurt someone else if he is not caught soon.
“A lot of people liked her, ya know she was good people, there’s no reason to take her life,” said Joseph Acuna.
Theresa Vigil’s brother Joseph Acuna said she was always helping others, so when her family found out she and her daughter’s boyfriend had been gunned down in her own home, police say by the landlord, Anaya, they were in shock.
“We’re all still crying, everybody’s still crying and mad, they still can’t believe it and I still can’t believe it,” Acuna said.
Tuesday afternoon an arrest warrant painted a better picture of what happened in the mobile home Monday afternoon on Anaya’s property.
Authorities believe Anaya was upset with Vigil over not paying January’s rent.
Vigil told Anaya over the phone she could give him the rent money on Friday, shortly after that phone call, investigators said Anaya came over to the mobile home with a gun to confront Vigil in person.
According to the warrant, Anaya first punched Vigil in the face, then punched her daughter in the face.
The commotion brought the daughter’s boyfriend, Austin Urban, 16, out of a back bedroom and he got in a fight with Anaya.
That’s when investigators said Anaya shot and killed Urban.
When Vigil came to and confronted Anaya, investigators said Anaya shot her in the forehead.
Vigil’s daughter told investigators she saw the whole thing.
“That’s the worse thing in life that could every happen to anybody, I mean you can’t even explain that at all,” Acuna said.
There was also another teen in the house, a friend of Vigil’s daughter.
According to the warrant, after the shootings Anaya told the two to put Vigil and Urban’s bodies in the trunk.
When the daughter said they were still alive and needed to get to the hospital Anaya eventually let them put Vigil in the car and take her to the hospital where she died.
Vigil’s daughter told investigators as she was leaving she saw Anaya walking toward his house.
Now Anaya is wanted on two open counts of murder.
“We came out here to try and make things right ya know try to get this guy behind bars before he tries to hurt somebody else,” said Acuna.
Vigil’s family did not want to speak for Urban’s family, but they said it looks like Austin was trying to protect Vigil and his girlfriend when Anaya shot him; they are grieving his death as well.
The U.S. Marshal’s Service has joined what is now a nationwide manhunt for Anaya.
He has known connections in Albuquerque, Colorado and California.
However, a law enforcement source tells News 13 that Anaya did not take any money or a car and that he has many relatives.
