SANTA FE (KRQE) - Fugitive murder suspect Arthur Anaya surrendered to SWAT officers in rural Santa Fe Friday afternoon after four days on the run.

He surrendered peacefully at about 4:45 p.m. after holding officers at bay and firing at least one shot at the first deputy sheriff on the scene.

Law officers converged on the home at 93 Agua Fria Road West shortly after 3 p.m. after a neighbor who spotted a motorcycle there became suspicious and reported a possible break-in.

At least one shot was fired at the deputy responding to that call, KRQE News 13 has confirmed.  The officer was not hit.

More officers and a SWAT team then surrounded the home about a mile east of the property where a woman and boy were shot and killed Monday afternoon.

Residents of nearby homes were evacuated, and at some point the officers began negotiating with Anaya for his surrender.

The home is in Santa Fe County south of Interstate 25 between the St. Francis Drive and Old Pecos Trail interchanges.

Old Pecos Trail was closed at Rabbit Road during the standoff in the rural area.

Anaya, 54, is suspected of gunning down two tenants of a mobile home on his property Monday afternoon over $100 in unpaid rent.

Theresa Vigil, 51, died at a hospital several hours after the shooting, while Austin Urbán, 16, who lived at the home with Vigil's daughter, died at the scene.

Anaya then fled on foot.

A friend told KRQE News 13 Anaya was unlikely to be taken alive since he would not want to return to prison.

Anaya has a violent criminal history as spent time in the state hospital after being found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
