SANTA FE (KRQE) - State and federal officers continue to comb the rugged country on the eastern edge of the Jicarilla Apache reservation Thursday for a man who shot at tribal officers on Tuesday.
Neither officer was hurt when the suspect identified as Rex Michael Sherwood, 48, fired an automatic weapon at them Tuesday afternoon after he fled a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 64.
Sherwood abandoned his car near Monero and took off on foot, New Mexico State Police reported.
State Police and FBI agents assisted by officers from the state parks and game departments are searching an area around Monero, Lumberton and Dulce to their suspect.
Sherwood, described as armed and extremely dangerous, is 6 feet tall, weighs 160 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. At the time of the shooting he was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, blue jacket and baseball cap.
Anyone with information on Sherwood's whereabouts can call 911 or State Police at (505) 753-2277.
