HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - More information has been released about a SWAT situation in Hobbs last week where a deputy was shot.

One of the two suspects arrested for shooting at police is a person of interest in a double homicide case in another county.

Early last week, the bodies of two men were found in Chaves County.

One man's body was found smoldering on the side of Buffalo Valley Road near Lake Arthur, and a second man was found dead near an oil field.

When deputies tried to serve a search Thursday at a home in Hobbs, people inside refused to come out. Two of the men have been identified as Juan Uribe-Vidal and James Gomez.

SWAT assisted when authorities attempted to serve the search warrant, and police said that's when the two men opened fire, hitting Sergeant Michael Tovar, of the Lea County Sheriff's Department in the arm and neck. He is okay.

Vidal and Gomez were arrested and charged with aggravated battery and assault on a police officer.

Authorities with the Chaves County Sheriff's Department said Vidal is a person of interest in the recent Chaves County murders.

Evidence was recovered at the scene in Hobbs, and investigators are now processing it.

“The truck or the vehicle was the main things that we wanted,” Lt. Britt Snyder, of the Chaves County Sheriff's Office said. “We will eventually obtain other items as well, and try to link those to our homicides and whether or not there will be a connection we're still unsure.”

Authorities have released the name of one of the victims found Wednesday in Chaves County. He is 48-year-old Mark Walters of the Artesia area.

Detectives are still waiting for OMI to find out the identity of the other victim.
