Mom accused of slashing kids throats

SANTA FE (KRQE) - Santa Fe Police officers arrested a Santa Fe mother after they say she slashed the throats of her two children.

Sherry Kay Resser, 39, is accused of slitting the throats of her 8-year-old and 6-year-old sons.

The two children were treated at Christus St. Vincent Hospital for wounds on their neck. The older boy sustained about 10 stitches. Both were treated for their wounds and then released into state custody Sunday afternoon.

Resser initially said a family acquaintance attacked the boys while they were riding in the car. Resser said when she stopped the car, the woman ran away. The mother told police that's when she drove her kids to the hospital, but when police interviewed the kids they had a very different story.

The oldest told authorities his mother tried to kill him.

Resser later recanted after the children's conflicting statements.

The weapon used in the crime, a box cutter type blade, was located hidden in a tissue box inside the emergency room her children were being treated.

Police say the mother didn't appear to be on drugs or drunk instead she told them she was taking powerful prescription medications used for treating bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia.

"The mother made some concerning statements about "the devil taking the kids away," said Lt. Louis Carlos with the Santa Fe Police Department.

He said when interviewed the mom told police she wanted to kill her kids before someone else did.

Ressor's neighbors say the family seemed normal and that the kids were often outside playing in the yard.

"She seemed pretty nice," said neighbor Andre Prince. "I would see her walking them in the morning and picking them up from school, so I thought she was a good mother."

Ressor was booked at the Santa Fe County Detention Center for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of abuse of a child and with tampering with evidence.

The children are in the Children, Youth and Families Department’s custody.
