PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) - A piece of scrap metal that was once a plaque honoring a famous civil rights leader was stolen.

But why would someone do such a thing?

Clovis police say the missing Martin Luther King Junior plaque was taken from a city park.

The Portales News-Tribune reports the Clovis police chief says the bronze plaque was found Friday quote "in pieces" at Clovis recycling.

Police had told recycling employees to be on the lookout for it, because of its value as scrap metal.

The chief says a suspect has been identified, but no arrests have been made as of yet.

The value of the plaque is $7,000.
