AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico man is being held on child abuse charges after authorities say a 5-year-old girl was severely beaten and burned with cigarettes.
The Farmington Daily Times reports ( http://bit.ly/PsGIuF ) that 32-year-old Daniel Nicholas Garcia of Bloomfield was arrested Monday and is being held on $500,000 cash-only bond.
According to court documents, a doctor told detectives that the girl was a "horribly beaten child." Doctors said the girl's head appears to have been slammed against the floor and her brain was bleeding, bruises covered her body and she had cigarette burns on the back of her hand.
Authorities say the girl remains in critical condition at University of New Mexico Children's Hospital in Albuquerque where she is in a coma.
It was unclear if Garcia had an attorney.
