Man calls 911, confesses to homicide

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - It is something that even surprised the 911 dispatcher, a man saying he was tired of running and wanted to turn himself in for a murder that was more than 20-years-old.

Police say Lawrence Scherer confessed to the murder of Roger Alderman on a 911 tape. He identified himself and told police Alderman was the man he killed years ago.

Caller: I need a police officer right now. Dispatcher: What’s going on? Caller: I am..I’ve done something wrong and I need to…to get arrested. Dispatcher: You’ve done something wrong? Caller: Yes ma’am. Dispatcher: What have you done wrong? Caller: I murdered a man.

It was August 22, 1991 when family members and a neighbor found Alderman’s body in his townhouse near Central and Juan Tabo. The case was cold until this May when police say Scherer called 911 confessing to the crime.

Santa Fe police interviewed Scherer. Police say they told them he stabbed Alderman because he tried to make sexual advances on him. Police took Scherer’s DNA but had to let him go until they had enough evidence for an arrest. Scherer took off, but officers in Colorado found him. He was brought back to Albuquerque and charged with murder.

Scherer later denied telling police he killed Alderman and claims he wasn’t in Santa Fe when the 911 call was made, but police also have a video interview of him as well.

He is due back in court next Monday.
