ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A battalion chief with the Los Alamos Fire Department is on administrative leave after being arrested in Albuquerque early Saturday and charged with DWI.
Kelly Sterna, 36, was released from jail later in the day, according to Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center records.
Jail records show he was arrested at 12:40 a.m. at Eubank Boulevard NE and Constitution Avenue.
The Albuquerque Police Department arrested a total of eight drivers there during a sobriety roadblock set up from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, according to APD.
In a statement released late Saturday afternoon Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes said Sterna was not on duty at the time and had been place on administrative leave.
"We understand that the public places their trust in us to behave in a professional, law-abiding manner, both on and off duty,” Hughes said in the statement. “Following our investigation into the situation, we will take appropriate action as needed.”
Hughes declined to comment further when contacted by KRQE News 13 except to say any administrative process would not begin until Monday.
