ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An up-and-coming Albuquerque boxer was forced to cancel his participation in an upcoming fight, partly because of a recent arrest in a domestic violence incident involving his wife.
Archie Ray Marquez, 21, was set to fight May 14 in Santa Inez, California.
In a news release Saturday, the boxer's manager pinned the cancellation on a sparring injury, but later revealed to News 13 the cancellation was partly because of Marquez' arrest.
Police were called to the boxer's Albuquerque home Thursday.
Marquez tried to take the phone away after his wife called 911, according to a criminal complaint which states the boxer hit his wife.
Marquez denied punching the alleged victim, but officers on scene identified him as the primary aggressor and arrested him.
His charges include aggravated battery on a household member and interference with communications.
Marquez has bonded out of jail.
Managers are hoping to see him fight in televised match June 25 in Albuquerque.
