Probe into shooting of KAFB cop continues

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The shooting of an Air Force police officer with his own weapon remains under investigation as city detectives have yet to question the tech sergeant shot early Thursday morning.

Shortly before 12:50 a.m. the 31-year-old officer was conducting a security patrol at the Maxwell housing area, which is off-base near Carlisle and Gibson SE and falls under Albuquerque Police Department jurisdiction.

The officer called out on the radio that he was approaching four individuals. He only described the individuals by their clothing, saying three were in dark clothes and one in a red hoodie.

Seconds after making that call, the officer called dispatch back saying he’d been shot.

Investigators say he was shot in the lower torso and that he was actually shot with his own service weapon.

“We do know his gunshot wound was sustained from his own weapon,” APD Officer Robert Gibbs said.  "We recovered that weapon and there was apparently no other weapon involved."

APD set up a wide perimeter in the area after the shooting and could not find anyone who they believe could have been involved.

At this time APD has not released the name of the officer but say he is listed in satisfactory condition at a nearby hospital. Investigators are waiting to interview the officer until he’s recovered a bit more.

Officer Gibbs says there are no other witnesses to the shooting or surveillance video to shed more light on what actually happened.

Base officials are conducting their own internal investigation and told KRQE News 13 they have not stepped up base security although earlier in the day vehicles entering and exiting the Maxwell gate were getting thorough searches.
