ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Bernalillo County plans to spend more than $2 million to prevent misconduct inside its detention center.
Metropolitan Detention Center Chief Ramon Rustin says the improvements include a digital camera system, two body scanners and a device to detect chemicals in mail.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the improvements planned over the next four months come after a series of jail beatings, a bribery scandal, rape accusations and other misconduct.
County officials say most incidents occurred before 2010 but have been mentioned more recently in lawsuits or settlements.
Under one change, jail employees accused of a crime face discipline or termination if they violate internal policies, regardless of how the criminal proceedings turn out.
The jail is among the nation's largest. It was designed for 2,236 inmates, but now holds about 2,800.
