SANTA FE (KRQE) - Santa Fe County’s latest larceny is not only high profile but its a bit unusual too.
The Sheriff’s Office told News 13 someone snuck onto a movie set and stole thousands of dollars worth of items used for creating explosions.
“Items including some propane bottles, propane burners and some copper tubing,” said Lieutenant William Pacheco.
They also caused thousands of dollars in damage in the process of looting the site at the bottom of the Santa Fe Ski Area.
The film being shot there is based on the book “The Lone Survivor” and it stars Mark Wahlberg and Emile Hirsch.
It’s the true story of a navy seal team that was wiped out, except for one man, on a mission in Afghanistan.
Filmmakers noticed the items were missing Tuesday morning.
“The items were going to be used for an explosives scene according to the information that was given to the deputy,” Lt. Pacheco said.
The sheriff’s office does not think the thieves stole the explosives to deliberately blow something up, but it is still worrisome.
“It’s always concerning ya know when items used to make explosives or fires that is concerning especially with the dryness we’re experiencing now,” Pacheco said.
The film has only been on location at the ski basin for a few days.
Deputies have no suspects yet, but the remoteness of the area may help in this case.
“It gives us some ideas of ya know maybe someone does know the area because they were able to get down there and back up with some large items,” said Lt. Pacheco.
The thief left behind quite a mess on the set causing more than $12,000 worth of destruction.
The Lone Survivor is expected continue shooting in the state through mid November with locations in and around Albuquerque and Chilili, N.M.
