ESTANCIA, N.M. (KRQE) - Two federal inmates tried--and failed--to break out of a private prison in Torrance County Thursday morning.
The escape attempt happened just after 11 a.m. during recreation time when the pair tried to scale two fences at the Torrance County Detention Center near Estancia, according to a statement released several hours later.
Prison staff maintained visual contact with the inmates during the incident and quickly took them into custody, the statement added.
At last report both were being treated at the prison infirmary for injuries. Their names, charges and the extent of their injuries have not been released.
Aerial video from KRQE News 13's Skyranger shows pieces of clothing still dangling from razor wire surrounding the facility operated by Corrections Corporation of America.
The facility was locked down during the escape attempt, and a headcount accounted for all staff and inmates.
