ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Construction equipment thieves, beware! A new identification system for recovering and returning stolen equipment was unveiled today by Albuquerque Police and local construction workers.

Unique identification numbers will now be assigned to individual construction companies to place on their tools and equipment. Should the equipment be stolen, pawn shops around town will be notified by police of what was stolen and the ID number that should appear on the item.

The system was developed a year and a half ago by Construction Industry Crime Alliance, or CICA, a partnership between construction representatives and the Albuquerque Police Department.

Police expect the new system to speed up the process in recovering stolen items as well as getting the equipment back in the hands of workers.

CICA members raised $1,900 to help pay for decals.
