ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A high football coach got arrested for DWI, and News 13 learned he tried to hide it from the Albuquerque Public Schools for a week.
Jessica Brannan is a student at Del Norte High School, she had no idea head football coach Chris Howe had been arrested, “Being the football coach, I expected him to be strict and everything, so it's shocking.”
Rio Rancho police said Howe was weaving in his white truck last week when they pulled him over on highway 550. Howe had an open container in the truck, and blew a .10, but he never told school administrators about the DWI arrest.
APS said it hasn't suspended Howe, who's worked for the district since 2006. APS said it won't even talk about his employment until Friday.
An APS spokesperson refused to go on camera but said Del Norte's principal is busy with PED work.
APS couldn't say if it was aware that this is Howe's second DWI. He took a deferred sentence back in 1997.
Howe's Del Norte Knights were 3-7 last year; they were district champs the year before.
