Home broken in three times in one month

Electronics, diapers, kids' clothes, food stolen

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - A single mom in southeastern New Mexico has become the target of thieves, not once, not twice, but three times in one month.

Whomever is responsible has sunk pretty low, taking everything from the woman's television, to her kid's new diapers, even food from her refrigerator.

Elya Ly, 28, is a single mom with two young boys. She says her Roswell home isn't much, but she's proud of what she's earned.

In the last month, nearly everything has been taken from her.

"The flat screen TV, the X-box, and all the electronics throughout the house, the Christmas, the kids' Christmas presents, and the baby's new toys--all gone," she recalled, after the first break-in.

It was January 1, when someone kicked in her back door, taking DVDs, her laptop, tools, nearly all of her electronics.

The thieves drove a vehicle through her fence, and pulled right up to her back door.

January 30, her door was pried open, and this time they took even more. "They just loaded up on groceries, shampoo, towels, you know, things I would have never in a million years thought someone would have taken from my house," said Ly.

She said they went through her refrigerator, they took diapers she just bought, and her kids shoes and clothes.

Sentimental items are gone, but that isn't the worse thing, she said. "It's really hit my oldest son the hardest, because now the few things that he has left, he's always scared when he goes to school," Ly said, choking up.

"He's afraid that the rest of his stuff's going get taken, so he hides it under his bed."

Monday night, Ly was hit again.

Now, she wants to start a neighborhood watch, and at the same time, offer comfort to her son.

She said she tells her eight-year-old son, "the break-ins haven't happened while we were, home, that God's protecting us, and that we have our health, and to be thankful for that."

"And I tell him that everything that was stolen is stuff that may take us a long time to replace, but it's just things," she said.

In Monday night's break-in, Ly said she believes the thieves used a key that may have been taken from one of the previous break-ins.

She didn't discover the spare key was missing until Monday, and she has since changed all the locks.

Police say they're looking into whether the three break-ins are all related. So far, they haven't named any suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call Roswell Police, or Chaves County Crimestoppers .
