ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former Bernalillo County corrections officer in federal court Thursday admitted his role in a brutal assault on an inmate.

Matthew Pendley, 26, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for lying to officers investigating the December 2011 beating of a Metropolitan Detention Center inmate.

Federal prosecutors said Pendley witnessed the unprovoked assault by Corrections Officer Demetrio Gonzales in a shower area at MDC but told county investigators he didn't remember what Gonzales was doing at the time.

Inmate Christopher Shields sustained multiple injuries during the attack during which he was beaten and choked.

Gonzales pleaded guilty to the violating Shields civil rights and last month was sentenced to nearly three years prison.

Corrections Officer Kevin Casaus, accused of hitting a shoving Shields, lying to investigators and falsifying a report on the incident, is set to go to trial next month.

A sentencing date for Pendley has not yet been set.
