ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Police have arrested a man for allegedly attacking a schoolgirl with a knife at an Albuquerque bus stop.
A 10-year-old Montezuma Elementary student told police she was waiting for the school bus with her classmates when a man with a pocketknife took her backpack using the knife to cut it off of her.
The girl was able to fight the man off and escape with only a scrape to her leg.
Heather Mosley was the only parent near the bus stop at the time of the incident and said she only heard what the children saw.
Mosley told KRQE News 13 that the young girl and her classmates were running and crying and that she saw the girl’s backpack was gone and her knee scraped up.
Mosley was able to confront the man police identified as Victor Anaya. She said when she approached Anaya she couldn’t get in a word edgewise before he started screaming.
Investigators said Anaya, 47, lives in an apartment building near the bus stop.
Besides a DWI charge in the 1990s, Anaya has a clean record. His neighbors described him as a “regular guy.”
Anaya is facing several charges including robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and child abuse.
