ALBUQUERUQE, N.M. (KRQE) - A football recruit who was kicked off the Lobo football team in October is now behind bars, accused of robbing his own cousin for drugs.

It happened in Lawrenceville, Georgia on June 7. Police say Demond Dennis, 21, who is from that area, was waiting outside the home when three of his friends went inside and pulled a gun on his 19-year-old cousin. They believe the men threatened her and took off with about a pound of marijuana.

Investigators say Dennis was the getaway driver and it was his cousin who pointed him out to police. Dennis's friends piled into the car and they all took off. Police say Dennis led them on a high speed chase for about four miles. Dennis crashed the car, and then took off on foot. That's when investigators called out the K-9 unit.

"Mr. Dennis and two others continued to run behind the convenience store," said Lawrenceville Assistant Police Chief Paul King. "After a short time K-9s located Mr. Dennis and the other occupant."

Police in Georgia said this has been quite the case to investigate.

"Sometimes when you have home invasion type robberies, particulary when drugs are involved, robbers know what they are looking for," said King. "But the fact that the suspect is related to one of victims, that in itself is highly unusual."

The former Lobo running back averaged 5.5 yards a carry as a freshman in 2009. He only played in six games as a sophomore last season before he was kicked off the team for academic reasons.

Dennis and his three friends all face felony drug, weapons and armed robbery charges.
