Fmr. Maine prosecutor arrested in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - For 18 years, James Cameron was one of Maine's top prosecutors and helped put criminals behind bars.

For two and a half weeks he was a fugitive himself.

That run from justice ended in Albuquerque when U.S. Marshall's arrested the former assistant attorney general in a Hastings store near Coors Boulevard and Montano Road.

Cameron, 50, was convicted on 13 child porn charges in 2010. He was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison and served a year of that time before a judge ruled he could be temporarily released while an appeals court heard his case.

Nov. 14 that court tossed some of Cameron's convictions but upheld most and Cameron was set to go back to prison. He decided to run instead, cutting off his ankle monitor and taking off in his Audi A6. U.S. Mashall's had been looking for him ever since.

That is until Sunday. U.S. Marshall's in Albuquerque got a tip that Cameron was in the state and started looking. Their search led them to the Hastings where they caught Cameron as he was leaving a restroom.

He had apparently been driving the same Audi but had changed plates.

Cameron was taken to Sandoval County Detention Center. He's set to appear in federal court before he's extradited back to Maine.
