Fast-food bandit caught in Albuquerque

Robber with a taste for takeout hits near UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Albuquerque police arrested a bandit with a taste for take out. The suspect is accused of robbing a string of fast food joints and it might have been his love for something sweet that did him in.

The robber may have tried to act like he wanted a donut and diet coke Friday night, but police say he was after quick cash.

Surveillance video from the Dunkin' Donuts on Central across from the University of New Mexico  shows the suspect in the act.

"He's got his gloves on, his hat, his head down," the manager described.

The donut shop has very tight security and the alleged robber, Frank Madrid, 37, did not know he was being watched.

Wearing medical gloves, Madrid reached into his pocket and pulled out a note without saying anything to the cashier. The manager did not stick around and rushed to the back to get some other employees. That's when Madrid takes off, no donut, no diet coke and no cash.

Police say Madrid did the same thing just minutes before at the Taco Bell just up the street on Central and Yale. He hit another fast food joint before that, but he didn't get far.

He was arrested on Eubank just South of I-40 about 30 minutes later.

Madrid has a long rap sheet. In 2003 he was charged with shooting a woman in the leg after she refused to give him $20 at an Albuquerque gas station. Police say her young son watched the whole thing happen.

Madrid also has a number of previous arrests. Everything from DWI to battery and gun charges. Now he has robbery charges for last night's crime spree.

His girlfriend, Audrey Hapke, 31, was also in the car with him Friday night. Police believe she was the getaway driver. She's charged with conspiracy.
