ALBUQEURQUE (KRQE) - A family devastated by drunk driving honored their son they lost 10 years ago.

Monday, a ghost bike was placed at the intersection of Montano and Taylor Ranch in northwest Albuquerque the very spot where Reese Nord was killed Labor Day weekend 2002.

He was riding his bike home from a friend's house when he was hit by Justin Mishall.

Monday’s ghost bike ceremony was not only to raise bike safety awareness, but to celebrate what would have been Reese’s 25th birthday.

”We're hopeful that people will pay attention and be careful over the holidays about not drinking and driving and also watching for the bikes out on the city streets,” Barbara Nord, Reese’s mother, said.

Police say Mishall was drunk, drinking a beer and talking on a cell phone when he hit Reese.

Mishall was sentenced to five years in prison.
