LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) - After hours of evacuations at Los Lunas Middle school, students and nearby residents can breathe a sigh of relief.
Around 9:30 a.m. a Los Lunas police officer was called to the fire department to check out a suspicious device found Wednesday by an employee of the fire department.
It was discovered Tuesday in the parking lot of a Walmart distribution center. An employee noticed the object and called the fire department which took it and kept it overnight. In the morning a police officer recognized the object as an improvised explosive device, and a one-mile perimeter was set up.
Nearby middle school students and staff in an administration office were taken by bus to the high school.
The Albuquerque Fire Department bomb squad was called out to take care of the explosive device.
It has been deemed safe, and officers are still investigating.
