'Execution style slaying' investigated

ESPANOLA, N.M. (KRQE) - A double homicide took another turn when the killer, or killers, set the crime scene on fire.
     
Deputies on routine patrol noticed the smoke Monday evening and found the two victims.
    
The details of this crime are scarce, but investigators say it appears one of the victims brought his friend dinner yesterday when something went terribly wrong.

Sheriff's officials say after murdering Matthew Maestas and Joseph "Geno" Valdez the killer, or killer, set fire to the trailer to cover up evidence.
    
One of Valdez’s family members, who did not want to show her face on camera, says she's in disbelief her uncle was killed.

“He was a good guy,” a family member said. “He had three daughters that he raised…and he took care of them, and his grandchildren,”

Family members and friends listened in horror as the Rio Arriba County sheriff detailed the murder of the two men.

“The nature of the homicides was brutal, to say the least,” Sheriff Tommy Rodella said. “I personally have not seen anything like this in the past."
    
Investigators aren't saying much else, but they do say it appears at least one of the victims knew the assailants.
    
They say the fire did not burn long enough to destroy crucial evidence.
    
Sheriff Rodella says this double homicide touched home.

"Personally speaking, I’ve known the victims in the past homicides and in this homicide, I knew both victims and I knew them very well,” Rodella said.
    
One of Valdez’s three daughters says she believes her father was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“He didn't deserve this, it's not fair,” the victim’s daughter, Andrea Suazo, said. “He's always trying to better people, always. He was always encouraging that friend to go to church and make him better.”

Maestas was 53-years-old and Valdez was 47-years-old.
    
Their bodies are now in the hands of the office of the medical investigator.
    
Investigators have not made any arrests.  

Valdez's family has set up an account with Wells Fargo and State Employees Credit Union to help with funeral costs.

The Rio Arriba sheriff says this latest crime is stretching his department thin.    

Investigators are already handling multiple homicides.
