ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former state police officer and his son arrested on murder charges both have had prior run-ins with the law.

Investigators say Jack McDowell and his son, John, killed 35-year-old James Chavez in his Rio Rancho home a year and a half ago.

Both were arrested for the crime on Tuesday.

Sources say the murder was over drugs and that either the victim or the suspects may have ties to the Bandidos Motorcycle Gang.

Online court records show Jack McDowell pled guilty to drug charges a few years after retiring and John has faced gun, assault and burglary charges.

"It just shows you don't ever really know who your neighbor is,” a neighbor said. “You really have to... I think it's critical to get out and find out who you're living next to because anything can happen.”

The bond for both suspects is now set at $1 million.
