ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police late Thursday arrested a suspected described as an ex-boyfriend in the death of a woman found beaten and stabbed on a northeast sidewalk earlier in the day.

The victim also now has been identified as Dawn Monique Vigil, 19. A newspaper carrier discovered her body at the corner of Chelwood Park and Chico NE at about 4:30 a.m. Investigators later followed a trail of bloody footprints to a nearby home where they executed a search warrant later in the day.

Shortly after 10 p.m. police arrested Dorall Smith, 32, on an open count of murder and tampering with evidence. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center under a $1 million bond.

The arrest warrant quotes Vigil's mother as saying Smith was her daughter's former boyfriend and that there had been an incident of domestic violence in May. Smith also told Vigil if she was ever with someone else, he would kill her, according to the warrant affidavit.
