'Ether Man' set to plead in ABQ rape

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The man accused of raping women in Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma is expected to plead guilty for some of the crimes he’s accused of committing in New Mexico.

Robert Bruce dubbed the “Ether Man” had haunted almost two dozen women around the Southwest, half of them in Albuquerque. Bruce was known for using a chemical-soaked rag to subdue his victim’s before raping them.

He’s currently serving a life term in Colorado for trying to kill a Pueblo police officer who was set to testify against him in a Peeping Tom case.

Officials say Bruce tried to blow up the officer’s home in 2009 because he knew if he were found guilty in that case he’d have to give up his DNA which would link him to his past rapes.

Last year Bruce pleaded guilty to rape charges in that same Colorado town.

As part of his plead deal in that case, Bruce agreed to help federal authorities close “Ether Man” cases in those other states.

Bruce is charged with 11 rapes in Albuquerque, part of a decade-long crime spree in the UNM area that began in 1991.

Bruce is scheduled to appear in an Albuquerque courtroom next Tuesday where he will plead guilty to aggravated battery and one of the 11 rape charges.
