ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The woman at the center of a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme at a northern New Mexico school district was discovered dead inside her Abiquiu home Saturday morning, in what state police describe as an apparent suicide.
Kathy Borrego was scheduled to be sentenced Monday in Santa Fe district court, after pleading guilty to felony embezzlement and tax evasion charges.
The former business manager for the Jemez Mountain School District admitted to stealing more than $3 million over the course of her 10-year career.
Borrego was out of jail on house arrest because of a medical and psychological condition.
She was facing up to 41 years in prison.
State police do not suspect foul play, but Borrego's body has been sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator for autopsy.
