ALAMOGORDO, NM (KRQE) - Police in Alamogordo are reminding people not to open the door to strangers, after police said two teens lied their way into an elderly couple's home to rob them.
It was just after midnight Monday morning, when two teens looking for cash and other valuables came to the RV Park along Alamogordo's busiest street.
"It was a random act of violence as far as we can tell at this time," Detective Roger Schoolcraft with the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety said.
The teens knocked on a door and gave the elderly couple that answered a fake story.
“They were asking for help with their car and that's how they gained access with someone coming to the door,” Schoolcraft said.
Once inside, police said the teens assaulted the man, and stole money and jewelry from the couple.
The man, who's in his 70s, was taken to the hospital and checked out after the beating.
He is okay, but neighbors said they aren't.
"In fact most of the people I've run into who are talking about it are more amazed than anything because this is a very safe place," resident Alan Hurst said.
Now the neighborhood watch is just making sure people stay extra vigilant.
"While this is extremely rare this can happen anywhere. It normally doesn’t, but it can happen, and I think people just need to use some common sense, be alert," Hurst said.
Police said they have several good leads and believe they know who the suspects are.
