Durango church a pawn in tax scheme

DENVER (AP) - A former board member of the company that owns The Durango Herald has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of tax evasion.
Former Ballantine Communications Inc. board member William Ballantine entered his plea Tuesday. The 62-year-old of Kirkland, Wash., is scheduled to be sentenced July 2. Prosecutors dropped 15 other counts.
He was accused of taking $395,000 from a charitable foundation his late mother had set up at the National Philanthropic Trust. Investigators say he arranged for St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Durango to receive the money and funnel it into Ballantine's personal bank account, after telling the pastor he was setting up a charity for children in Antigua.
The church reported the transactions to authorities.
The Durango Herald reports (http://bit.ly/Hn42tb) Ballantine said Tuesday he felt ashamed and embarrassed.
