BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) - A domestic dispute turned violent Monday morning.
Belen Police say a Belen man shot his soon to be ex-wife in front of their kids Monday morning.
The shooting happened around 8:20 a.m. in an apartment complex on West Aragon Rorad.
Police say 31-year-old Pio Aquino and his wife Maria, 31, are in the middle of a divorce and started arguing when he came to return the kids to her.
Police say at one point Pio grabbed a gun and shot his wife in the abdomen.
The couple's three kids saw hit happen and the oldest called 911.
“Yeah unfortunately it's a domestic violence situation that got, went too far,’ Chief Dan Robb said.
Police say it appears Maria will survive.
She's listed in serious condition.
Pio has been taken into custody and detectives are working to file charges against him, they will include attempted murder and child abuse.
A relative is said to be taking custody of the children for now.
