ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A bleeding and desperate man jumped on top of a car Thursday to get away from two American bulldogs before police rescued him and killed one of the dogs.
Albuquerque police said a man in his early 20s was just walking in a neighborhood near Coors Boulevard and Arenal Road when the bulldogs went after him biting his head and anywhere else they could latch onto.
The man jumped onto car breaking its windshield, but it wasn't high enough for him to get away.
So he got on top of an SUV.
Cops arriving at the scene found him there, and that's when they say the male dog went after them. So, they opened fire and killed it.
The bleeding man was taken to the hospital.
"I'm out here with the kids quite often and never see any dogs roaming loose," Thomas Rodriguez told KRQE News 13.
The owner of the dog that was shot declined a request for an on-camera interview but did say the dogs somehow got out of the backyard, something they never do.
She says one dog belongs to a friend who let them keep her so they could breed the two.
For now she belongs to animal control.
Police have not said how many officers opened fire or how many times the dog was shot.
Animal control has not said what will happen to the female dog or if the owners will be cited.
The identity of the injured man and his current medical condition were not released.
