TORRANCE COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) - The parents of the toddler who died of exposure after his mother left him naked in the Torrance County desert are suing the county and state police.
Diana Willis is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic.
During a psychotic episode in 2007, she stopped her car on Highway 60, took off her clothes and her 15-month-old son's clothes and ran off.
A witness who saw her called 911, but the boy's body wasn't found until two days after Willis wandered naked and disoriented into a yard near Encino.
The lawsuit claims that an uncertified 911 dispatcher led officers to the wrong spot, didn't follow up and miscoded the call as a welfare check.
