Day of murders marked with ceremony

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's a sad anniversary in Albuquerque: Seven years ago five people--two of them police officers--were shot to death in just one day by one man.

On Friday the two police officers killed that day were remembered at the northwest Albuquerque substation named in their memory.

The names of all five victims draped a wreath.

Officers Mike King and Richard Smith were gunned down on Aug. 18, 2005, outside the home of John Hyde at the corner of Gold Avenue SE and Ash Street. They were attempting to serve a pickup order for a psychological evaluation requested by Hyde's family and approved by a judge.

Hyde is accused of ambushing the officers but has not been convicted of any charges.

Smith and King both retired from the Albuquerque Police Department but had recently rejoined the force.

The others killed earlier that day were state Department of Transportation worker Ben Lopez and two employees at Rider Valley Motorcycles, Garrett Iverson and David fisher.

Hyde, previously diagnosed as schizophrenic, was ordered to spend 179 years in the state mental hospital for the murders. A review of his competency scheduled for every two years to determine if he can stand trial.
