DA: Blood test showed he was high on amphetamines

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Bernalillo County district attorney has refiled DWI charges against prominent attorney Ron Bell.

The DA's office said blood test results came back last week showing Bell was high on prescription amphetamines when police pulled him over for swerving on Tramway Boulevard in June.

Even though a breath test showed no signs of alcohol, a deputy said Bell's hands were shaky, and he failed field-sobriety tests.

Bell was originally charged with DWI, but the charge was dropped until those test results came back. Bell's attorney said the charges are bogus.

"We are disheartened by the idea that the district attorney, knowing what the blood level was for this prescription medication, went forward with this," said Sam Bregman, Bell's attorney. "This is a waste of time and judicial resources."

Prosecutors said they have an expert opinion showing Bell was not capable of driving safely.
