ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Mallorie Chavez nearly killed a 6-year-old girl earlier this year when she hit the child with her car, and last week she failed to show up in court to face the charges.

Chavez repeatedly failed driver's tests and was driving without a license on the day she hit the little girl.

Monday, District Attorney Kari Brandenburg announced that Chavez is the fugitive of the month after she skipped out on her arraignment last Monday.

"I just don't want people to think I'm some like-careless animal just out driving around with no license," Chavez said during a March interview.

This isn't the first time Chavez has been in trouble with the law. Before, police said she hit Kaylin Ford, 6, she was convicted twice for driving without a license.

Court records show she's been arrested on outstanding warrants three times.

"I've studied the books and in school, I've studied Driver's Ed, I've just never passed the test is the reason I don't have a license. I've studied the books and I properly know how to drive," Chavez said.

Ford suffered broken ribs, a shattered pelvis and several skull fractures from the accident.

Chavez's explanation didn't sit will with the young girl's mother.

"I can't handle that, I almost lost my daughter due to someone who was being careless," Tish Nieto said.

Chavez is charged with felony child abuse with great bodily harm and several misdemeanors.

The District Attorney's Office still has the option of adding another felony charge against Chavez for failing to appear in court last week.

Kaylin Ford has recovered from her injuries.
