PENA BLANCA, N.M. (KRQE) - A call to the Drunk Busters hotline Sunday touched off a dangerous pursuit recorded by a police dashcam that ended with the suspected drunken driver running over himself.
Two concerned motorists called Drunk Busters when they became concerned about another driver.
The westbound chase on State Road 16 from Interstate 25 toward Cochiti Lake began when a New Mexico State Police officer caught up with a suspect later identified as Roy T. Aguilar, 21, of Santo Domingo pueblo.
The dashcam video showed his truck weaving from one side of the road to the other before swerving in front of one oncoming car that drove off the pavement to avoid him. He then careened back across the roadway narrowly missing a second car before plowing through a fence and heading into open range.
He finally stopped but shifted the transmission into reverse. When he opened the door and fell to the ground partially under the truck a front wheel backed over both of his legs.
State Police called paramedics.
"We took him to the hospital," Senior Patrolman Grace Romero said. "It took six of us to get him out … of the ambulance.
"He was very combative. We did have to restrain him the whole time we were at the hospital."
State Police arrested Aguilar on a charge of aggravated DWI. Inside the truck they reported finding an almost empty bottle of vodka.
"He didn't remember anything," Romero said. "He told me he had thought he was taking the exit to Santo Domingo, and he didn't.
"He was eight miles prior to that at the Cochiti exit."
Aguilar is jailed. His injuries were minor.
Police said it'll take a couple weeks to process a blood sample that was taken to check for alcohol.
