ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A truck stolen in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights early Wednesday morning almost got to the South Valley before a satellite-based security system brought police to where it had been abandoned.
A search for a suspect that included police dogs failed to turn up the thief. However the OnStar system may have kept the truck from ending up in pieces at a chop shop, police said.
"OnStar is a great tool," Albuquerque police Officer Nadine Hamby said. "Every time there is a vehicle reported stolen, OnStar gives their 100-percent cooperation to the police department.
"This isn't the first time OnStar has contacted us. It happens quite frequently."
The truck was taken from Haynes and Pennsylvania NE and recovered at Prince and Rio Bravo SE. The owner was able to pick up the truck from the scene.
