ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Rio Grande High School, Ernie Pyle Middle School and Kit Carson Elementary School were placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon as Bernalillo County deputies search for a suspect in the area. The suspect who caused the lockdown was taken into custody.
The district's Web site had earlier indicated that Kit Carson had been released from lockdown, but Albuquerque Public Schools spokesperson Rigo Chavez said that was not the case. The school had already let out for the day when the lockdown was put in place around 2:20 p.m., but several students were still there for after-school programs. The lockdown was lifted at 4:50 p.m.
According to John Walsh, spokesperson for the Albuquerque Police Department, police are searching for a man they believe pointed a gun at an Albuquerque police officer at Raven Lane and Tapia Boulevard SW around 1:30 p.m. The man did not fire the gun.
Police chased the man, who crashed his car near the high school. Nobody was injured in the crash, but the suspect took off on foot.
Bernalillo County deputies and Albuquerque police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect, and the Albuquerque Police Department helicopter was dispatched to help with the search.
