ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Former political leader Manny Aragón was ordered Tuesday to pay nearly $2 million in fines and restitution for his role in skimming more than $4 million in public money from the construction of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse.

Aragón was sentenced Wednesday in federal court. He and prosecutors had already agreed on a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence during a plea deal in October, which the judge said he wouldn't change.

Instead, Judge William P. Johnson on Tuesday decided on how much in fines and restitution Aragón would pay.

He ordered Aragón to pay more than $1 million in restitution and $750,000 in fines.

Meanwhile, coconspirator Raul Parra, who also pleaded guilty for his role, is due to be sentenced Tuesday afternoon.
