A man wanted on drunken driving warrants was detained Monday morning after he allegedly had a gun in his carry-on baggage as he went through security at the Albuquerque International Sunport.

Kody Vaughn, 26, was placed in handcuffs around 8 a.m. at the security checkpoint. Police said he was heading for Phoenix.

Airport security officials said they found a weapon in a piece of Vaughn's carry-on luggage. He was taken in for questioning.

Airport spokesperson Dan Jiron said passengers try to board an airplane with a gun every few months.

In each case, Jiron said, the person legally owned the gun but forgot it was in luggage.

Jiron said Vaughn had told police he didn't know he had the gun in his bag.

It's not yet clear if Vaughn had a permit for the gun.

He could face a $10,000 fine from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration and criminal, civil and administrative charges.

According to state records, Vaughn has outstanding warrants concerning a drunken driving arrest.
