An out of control driver led deputies on a chase along Interstate 40, and other drivers were forced off the road to avoid being hit.

The chase started near Edgewood. It ended 23 miles down the road near I-40 and Eubank.

The incident ended when the driver's Mazda truck slammed into the middle barrier of the interstate. Both tires were blown, and the rims were dented up.

The driver, a man in his late 20s, was arrested and hauled away shortly after the chase.

Deputies said they first spotted the truck weaving back and forth on the interstate. Police said they thought he was drunk, so a deputy tried to pull him over.

"We tried to stop him several times with lights sirens. He refused to stop, hit the barrier wall on inside and went across hit other side, went back and forth hitting it several times," Lt. Andy Nazario with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies said they wanted to use a spike strip to stop him, but there was just too much traffic.

So the police decided on a Pit maneuver. A deputy used the front of his vehicle to bump the truck to force it out of control.

Deputies don't believe the man was drunk after all, but they do think he was impaired by medication.

During the chase, the man's mom was on the phone with 911, telling deputies that her son was on medication, and shouldn't be driving.

Deputies said the man was checked out by paramedics and then taken in for questioning.

During the chase, other drivers were forced to pull off the road to avoid being hit, but no one was hurt, according to deputies.

The man's name has not been released or what type of medication he was on. Deputies said that's all part of the investigation.
